Square's Problem with Final Fantasy III

For a long time we thought Capcom couldn't count to "three". But they finally made Street Fighter III, and everything was good in the world. But is there another company that isn't willing to hit that number?

Oddly enough, the answer is yes, and it's not who you'd expect. You see, even though Square has already made Final Fantasy III, it appears to me that they would like to forget about it as soon as possible.

When Square first announced the Final Fantasy remake on the WonderSwan, gamers got excited that they would be able to relive the first six adventures on the go. Square did an EXCELLENT job bringing us a nicely redone Final Fantasy, and an equally great job on the second installment. But what they did next was truly stunning.

Out of nowhere, Square announced that Final Fantasy IV

would be the third installment of the WonderSwan series. And Square has yet to release Final Fantasy III on the portable.

In the U.S. Square decided to introduce a line of "Final Fantasy Collections" for the PlayStation. The first edition featured Final Fantasy V and VI, only one that had been released in the United States previously. The second Final Fantasy collection featured Final Fantasy IV and Chrono Trigger.

And just last week Square announced that Final Fantasy I and II would find their way to the PlayStation. But what about Final Fantasy III? There's no Final Fantasy III on the PlayStation OR WonderSwan. It's completely ignored. WHY?? What is Square afraid of? Perhaps I'll never find an answer that will satisfy me.
