Virtua Cop

Virtua Cop is one tough game to review. Like other "gun" games, Virtua Cop doesn't exactly scream innovation. But AM2 can be commended for making what was the first (and not the last) polygonal gun game.

Virtua Cop looks fantastic regardless of how the control is. And being able to actually pick out the target on your, um, target really does make up for the fact that there really is no player control. When I first got the game on my Saturn I spent the first two hours trying to shoot all the villains in the legs just to see them fall over in non-life threatening pain.

But the game feels too short. If you are a sharp shot (or have played the game twice) you really can go through the game in about twenty minutes. There are only three levels, and none of them are extremely challenging.

Sega has never been known for packaging a lot of extras with their games (unlike, say, Namco), and Virtua Cop is no exception. There really isn't anything packaged with the game, but you have the arcade game represented to a "T". I could have enjoyed maybe an extra couple of levels or something.

Where this game does excel, however, is the two player mode. Often I never even have a second person, but to play it one player with two guns (John Woo style) just makes me smile more than most of other shooters!

In the days of first person shooters, one really has to stop and ask if we need more games like this. But for what it is, it's alright.
