Beware of Exploding Lara Croft

Welcome to the 32 Dangerous Cheat Codes, a brand new series that will run daily between November 24 and December 25. Join us as we discuss the hazardous ramifications of some of your favorite cheat codes. Today we're taking a look at one of video gaming's most explosive cheat codes. See why you don't want to sidestep the wrong way in Tomb Raider II in this episode of 32 Dangerous Cheat Codes.

This is Cody. I don't know him, but he seems like a pretty cool guy. He just turned 30 and is on an adventure to try new things, like drinking onion juice, learning how to skateboard and crocheting ninja turtles. And while I only know Cody through watching his videos on YouTube, I feel like I know him well enough to make this bold statement: Cody doesn't want to unexpectedly explode the next time he jumps into the air.

If that sounds shocking, then clearly you haven't put yourself in the durable shoes of Lara Croft. This was a woman who not only faced the elements and dinosaurs, but also the knowledge that she could literally explode at any moment. And I'm not talking about a minor explosion where she just loses a few fingers, but every single part of her body getting torn apart and flying in all directions. Yeah, Lara had it tough.

Believe it or not, this is actually a code you could use in Tomb Raider II. For whatever reason, pulling off a complex set of moves will mysteriously turn Lara into one of those useless Lemmings. She has to sidestep Left, then Right, then Left, then hold WALK and step Forward, then step Backwards. Next, turn Lara around three times in any direction, then jump forward and while in the air press the ROLL button. If you do it right, everybody's favorite tomb raider will suddenly explode and the game will end.

While not very practical, the fact that the code exists is a little troubling. Just imagine what it must be like to know that if you accidentally dance a certain way, you'll go flying in a million different directions. Or worse, not knowing that this could happen until it's too late. And if that's not enough, just imagine the chain reaction it could have. If you're in a crowded room, an exploding Lara could take out dozens of people. Or maybe start a fire or bring down a building. And all because she side-stepped wrong? No wonder Lara spends all her time out in the middle of nowhere.
