A few months ago we took a look at Johnny Turbo and his extremely violent advertisement for the TurboDuo. Apparently TTI wasn't the only company to come up with the idea to use a lengthy comic book to help sell people on their product. Sega decided to do exactly the same thing when they released Sonic the Hedgehog in 1991.

To introduce America to this brand new hero, Sega decided to explain the character's back story. This seven page comic book detailed the reasons why Sonic became blue, how Dr. Robotnik became Eggman and why Sonic can go so fast. But we didn't like that story. It was stupid and didn't really explain why people should care about Sonic. Instead we decided to completely rewrite Sonic the Hedgehog's first comic. That's right, we rewrote it. Because this is something I like to call Comic Book Mods.

In this episode we learn that Sonic may be running from more than Eggman. Perhaps there are some deeper fears at play here, maybe even a tragic vision about his 3D future. But don't worry about that now. Because this episode is here to remind you about a time before Sonic Unleashed or that terrible Sonic the Hedgehog 3D reboot. A time when we didn't know who Amy was and Knuckles hadn't gone Chaotix yet. It was a simpler time, when the worst thing about Sonic was a lame pinball spin-off. So keep those thoughts in mind as we take you on a journey into Sonic the Hedgehog's very first comic strip!

About These Seven Pages: Regardless of the words we added to the comic, it's important to remember that this was Sega's attempt to advertise Sonic the Hedgehog. This was at a time before people knew who he was and why he was so special. All we had seen were screenshots and official art. It wasn't until we saw how fast the game was that we realized that Sega was actually on to something. Unfortunately that's not so clear in this seven page advertisement. NOTE: While the artwork may be real, Sega had nothing to do with the pure venom being expressed in the new story. If you're offended by this comic then chances are you're the fool that keeps buying Sonic the Hedgehog games, in which case you have only yourself to blame.
