It's time once again for Defunct Games' 33 Consoles of Christmas, your 33 part guide to the best and worst system designs of all time. Join Cyril Lachel and Chad Reinhardt as they judge 33 different game consoles based on what they think of the look. Forget about actual hardware and software, the only thing these guys care about is talking about their exterior design. Join us every day between November 23 and December 25 for a new console review!
Synopsis:
It's been a bumpy road for Sony as they've tried to launch their third major console. After reinventing the industry and becoming the biggest name in video game consoles, Sony is back with their riskiest venture to date. The PlayStation 3 is not only a next generation console capable of generating some of the best graphics the world has ever seen, but it's also a "cheap" Blu-Ray DVD player. 2006 found Sony trying to defend their expensive price tag ($600) and lack of AAA titles. But no matter what you thought of the PS3's launch, few are going to argue that Sony fans will see some really strong titles in 2007 and beyond. Will the PlayStation 3 be able to outdo Sony's success with the PlayStation 2? Talk to me in five years and I'll let you know.
Best Games:
Resistance: Fall of Man, Ridge Racer 7, and not much more (yet).
With the exception to the PSP, so far I have given each of the Sony consoles a "B" grade. This probably won't come as a surprise but I'm not about to buck tradition when grading the PlayStation 3. The PS3 is a good looking system that somebody manages to say "DVD player" and "game player" in one breath. The PlayStation 3 neither looks like a traditional DVD player or a game system; instead it walks that line hoping to attract both markets. How much I like the PS3 seems to depend on what angle I'm looking at it from. I really like the look from the top (except for the out of place Spider-Man text), but if I'm seeing the system from the front while loading a game I cringe a little. The bad news is that Sony's next generation console is the worst looking of all of the next generation consoles. On the other hand, the good news is that by now all of the major companies have figure out how to make an attract console and none of them are stinkers.
Apparently, this system is already thinking of ways to kill me, and the design shows. I've never really felt that a piece of machinery was smarter than me until I saw the PlayStation 3. It's like a shinier, faster, scarier PS2. I think the black model is the most attractive, but I don't care for the font employed for the logo; it reminds me of Spider-Man every time I see it. I have a few reservations about the actual CD slot being silver; it just looks a tad out of place to me. Unless you're a cheap bastard you sprang for the six-hundred dollar model, so you have USB ports coming out the yin-yang, but they don't feel un-necessary. In fact, I wish it had USB ports on the sides, the top, and on the actual games, but that's probably just me. I think that Sony created the monster that will eventually spell my doom, and I'm happy that my assailant is so pleasing to the eyes.
