WALL OF TEXT EXPLAINED: What you're looking at is an episode of Countdown w/ Defunct Games published before 2006. As you can tell, something has gone horribly awry. I won't bore you with the technical details, but it has to do with the old layout being incompatible with the new. Eventually, we would like to retrofit these old episodes of Countdown, but that will require a significant amount of time. As Defunct Games has only a limited staff, we aren't sure when we'll have the chance to fix this article. #5 Gamers who aren't supposed to be there Like every year (and almost every convention) there are always people that sneak through the guards and find themselves looking at the best of future gaming. It could be worse this year, since they've all had a few months to practice their stealth maneuvering in Konami's Metal Gear Solid 2. Thankfully people that are caught in a place where they are not supposed to be are taken, locked away, and beaten periodically. Well, maybe that's not true, but who knows, I have an in, so it's not going to happen to me. #4 Price Cuts Sony has already dropped their price (from $299.99 to $199.99) and Microsoft is expected to follow suit. But what about Nintendo? Will the GameBoy or GameCube drop their price? Will Nintendo unroll a new price point for their N64? If anything is for certain, this year's E3 will almost guarantee a cheaper price point for your new next gen system. But how will people look at this? For Sony, at the top of their game, their PlayStation 2 is almost two years old and in need of a price cut. But how will people view Microsoft's cut? Will it be viewed as a good move, or a sign of weakness and desperation? We'll find out soon enough. #3 There will be at least one ridiculous product And this year it looks like it's a "power glove" knock off that allows you manipulate photos, music, and other computer functions. How does it work? According to the promotional literature, "P5 is the revolutionary new P5 "exoskeleton glove" that allows you to manipulate images, game characters and 3D objects on your computer screen with only subtle movements from your hands, fingers and wrist!" And what's worse, if you keep reading they explain that it will be "the most talked about product at E3". I'm not sure about you, but the idea of another power glove sounds intriguing. #2 Meeting celebrities that haven't played a videogame, EVER! Perhaps Tony Hawk and Matt Hoffman play games. Bruce Campbell? Probably. I'm putting good money on the fact that Richard Garfield, the creator of Magic: the Gathering, has played at least one game in his life. But what about Tina Jordan (Playboy Magazine's Miss March 2002), Nascar legend Dale Earnhardt, Jr., and WWF super star Stacey Kiebler?? For some strange reason I don't feel these are Nintendo's "target audience". Thankfully this year there are more celebs that are likely to play games than not, and no matter what, this year's E3 is all about Mr. T (who is promoting the Rocky game, of all things). #1 Many of the biggest deals will happen in the bathroom While everybody is trying to see that game behind closed doors, it's really the closed bathroom stall where the excitement happens. Hmm, that sounds a little wrong. But it's true, many interesting comments, thoughts, and ideas are born while washing hands, taking a pee, and resting up after a little too much partying. What will we hear in the bathroom this year? Perhaps the only way to know is to hang out in the bathroom. Question: You don't really see Nintendo dropping their GameCube price do you? It seems a bit soon, don't you think? What's your reasoning?? Assuming the Microsoft follows Sony's lead and drops their price to $199.99, Nintendo will only have a few choices. It was Nintendo's desire to have the cheapest system on the market, and they only recently have started to over take Microsoft's Xbox in per week sales figures. I suspect that we'll see Nintendo drop their GameCube to $179.99 and lower the price of all their accessories. If Nintendo chooses to keep the $199.99 price point, I suspect we'll see a pack in game announced. I guess we'll all find out in a matter of time.
