This Week in Reviews: June 17, 2016

Not even the industry's biggest trade show was going to keep Defunct Games from posting reviews. Because of a new game lull, we were forced to dig through the backlog and cover games we missed along the way. This started with Between Me and The Night, which hit Steam back in February. We also took a look at Neverending Nightmares, which found its way onto PS Vita and PlayStation 4 a few weeks back. And then there's 1917 - The Alien Invasion, a brand new retro-inspired shoot-em-up.

While it never fully lives up to its potential, Neverending Nightmares does have a few great horror moments and several satisfying endings. It's also drenched in atmosphere, giving off the impression that something big is about to happen at any moment. It's a tense experience that could have used a few more story beats and a little more puzzle solving. It's not bad, but Neverending Nightmares wears out its welcome quickly.

The Alien Invasion is a fun but basic vertical shoot-em-up inspired by the hits of the early 1990s. While it's short and doesn't do enough with the time period, the price is right and the boss fights are well designed. 1917 - The Alien Invasion is a fun shooter that is over too soon.

Part point and click adventure game and part side-scrolling action game, Between Me and The Night is a compelling journey that loses its way from time to time. The game has a deliberate pace that may appeal to some, but I was left yearning for more story beats and a little more writing. Too much of the adventure is spent wandering the halls looking for specific objects to interact with.
